Crusader AXE is almost a true "yellow dog democrat:" yet, I can feel sorry for those who are actual conservatives and Republicans trying to figure out what to do in the face of fanatics, lunatics, and right wing nut whackjobs. There's more than a bit of schadenfreude in that, but it's there. Anyway, this David Corn piece that recounts a somewhat confessional interview with a Tea Party-trounced in the primary conservative Republican reflecting on what's happening with his party and what happened to him is worth reading. He points out that these people are crazy. Well, duh. But, he chose not to compromise with lunacy, but to try to talk to it logically, rationally and with some knowledge. Frankly, some of his descriptions remind me of Hunter S Thompson trying to check into the hotel at the Police/DA convention in Fear and Loathing...he had to feel at times like he was dealing with giant lizards out to rip him to shreds. But, where Hunter was able to find a strategy to survive -- don't make eye contact, keep it simple, get in and get out -- this poor guy actually tried to explain to these people. One of his colleagues was surprised he spent more than 10 minutes with the crazies. Well, if you remember the Jesuit missionary in The Mission going off the cliff tied to the cross, you know how that worked out.
He reflects that the Dems will have a party laughing at what happens when these people try to govern, and I think he's wrong. Anyone who cares about the country will be horrified at the ultimate triumph of the Know Nothings...and anybody who is forced to live in this country or in this world with the United States needs to worry. Think about Momma Grizzly Palin and Todd doing lines of coke off each other's back with access to the Nuclear Launch Codes and get very worried indeed.
