You (and me) are showing our age. It was 30 years. Becton took over VII Corps in 78. I got to meet him when he visited our post (Illeshiem, near Nurnberg in Spring of 79. I was HHC Co XO and BN Mess Officer for 1st BN 6th INF. We set up the brand new Mess Trailer (like a mini kitchen with a serving line) and he inspected it. He seemed to be a good commander. I somehow missed his edict on pregnancy, I may have been out on a REFORGER as an umpire..

Crusader AXE

In 1978, I was the Chemical NCO for 69th ADA in Wurzburg and we had a Hawk Battery in Illesheim. The Tacsite was out in the middle of the local training area, on a saddle with radars on each hump and the missiles down below along with the missile area. In 78-79, I spent a lot of time down there getting the battery ready for NATO Tacevals. Miserable stinking place. Our Group Commander, Don Infante, relieved the battery commander there because of not taking care of his soldiers. Something to do with hot soup in the mess hall when the Hawk was blowing over the Hawks, if you can imagine. Amazing view from that Tacsite. Spent a lot of time in a gasthaus in Bad Windsheim...I recall that during Reforger in 78, I was shocked from sleep by a M60 that had managed to get lost and wander through the town...totally off limits of course. Marvelous. As I recall, there were problems with soldiers raping locals; there was a bigger problem for us when one of the soldiers was homosexually raped and left naked with a broom stick up his ass, unconscious in a sea of piss and the day room. Ah, memories...
