Thanks AXE,
I just sat throught several weeks of long budget meetings with our Selectmen (two of whom are women), and they had difficulty accepting the new meme. At one point I said in frustration: "Okay, you want to raise next year's School budget 3.65% and place an additional burden on local property owners? Fine. Then let those of us with no children presently utilizing the system's resources have a say in the curriculum!" Eventually the new budget passed, in the early hours of Sat. morning, with a "modest" 1.9% overall increase. But the good old days are over. We got our preliminary contracts to lock in our rates for next season's heating oil. The AVERAGE increase we figured was 240%. Several of us were planning on using the stimulus checks to pay our property taxes. (This is probably the last year we can afford to own the adjacent woodlot. The pressure to develop all open lots with any proximity to water has become intolerable.)
July 1st will indeed be a date to remember....
