Crusader AXE watched the election coverage and thought. He watched the post-election coverage and thought. He watched the analysis and thought. One of the things I'm thinking is why do I not feel better...well, there are two reasons. First of all, the radical nonsense of the administration combined with the three-monkey-congress have put the nation and the world in a place where radical solutions are necessary. Unfortunately, the conventional wisdom is that the center went for the Dems, and the Dems must move toward the center. Radical change from those operating as Phil Ochs said "ten degress from left of center in good times; ten degrees from right of center when it affects them personally" is fairly unlikely.
The other reason is that the Bush1 loyalists who are taking over various pieces are part of the problem. They are loyal to GHWB first; not the country. So, while the new SecDef might be a change, he's going to be more focused on balencing the remaining Bush2 loyalists with the Bush1 version of realpolitik (which at least doesn't include Henny the K Kissinger) than on doing that which needs to be done. Chris Matthews had a good point yesterday - what do we accomplish is we stay another ten months or ten years that is worth the lives and money? Good question. Does Condi have the imagaination or personal clout to put together a coalition of the surrounding nations (Arab, Persian, Shia, Sunni, Whirling Dervish, etc.?) and have them take over? Does a bear shit in porcelin? Is the Pope a woman?
Granted, the possibility exists that some of the real insanity may be rolled back, if John McCain and Hillary Clinton can forget about being president and focus on what needs to be done. A nice hearing on the Patriot Act and the end of habeas corpus might be in order. Perhaps the tax cuts can end, and something be done about returning us to something like not bankruptcy...but, given the whiney, petualant, all noblesse and no oblige character of this President, do you really think he'd sign any of that?
I am also disappointed that we defeatists did not get Pamela Anderson enough votes in our non-campaign for a write for her as California Governor to get her listed as something besides "Other" in the California Secretary of State's vote tally. This does not bode well for our abilities in 2008 to elect Holier than Mao and Captain Capitualtion to the highest offices in the land. We'll see. Our convention is probably going to be equidistant from our furthest outposts sometine. I am soliciting bids, and so far there is an IHop in Terre Haute Indiana owned by Larry Bird's cousin Dwezzile Bird that has agreed to reserve us a table. We'll see...
