mr.fun has not had to deal with death lately, so don't jump to any conclusions. I am fine.
it was a couple weeks ago mr.fun was watching a special, on a music channel other than eMpTV, on the late and great Johnny Cash. I remember hearing Hurt by Mr.Cash awhile back, and thought it a pretty amazing song. I do not remember the video coming out because I don't watch videos. the only reason mr.fun has cable, or a television for that matter, is due to circumstances beyond his control. tiffany perhaps left the cable on in his apartment when the lady who lived there before him passed. that is her gift to me.
anyhow, the story goes something like this: Mr.Cash was recording a number of covers dealing with mortality and death, as he was nearing the end of his term here (wherever here is). well Mr.Cash made the cover of Nine Inch Nails' (Trent Reznor) Hurt. the video came later. I recall the family's reaction on the show, because the lyrics are pretty potent, and once you learn a little more about Mr.Cash, you see why:
I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
the family was blown away.
Mr.Reznor at first resisted allowing the cover, until he heard Mr.Cash sing it. I've since had the opportunity to see Walk the Line, the story of the Man in Black. I've also had the chance to download both songs, and compare. I've not walked a mile in either man's shoes, but I can tell you this: Mr.Cash crushed it. he defeated Mr.Reznor's version in ultimate fashion. I would say that you can hear a lifetime of hurt pouring through his voice in that song. like it's all just beneath the surface of the voice, and if it catches you just right, you'll understand but an ounce of what he's feeling.
this is just a little blurb, just something I wanted to share. rather a crappy little post.
black is not void of color, it is all of them combined. maybe that's why people fear the color traditionally - it's so hard to take all at once. that is why we hoist the white one here at defeatist central, because we're void of any such thing.
I surrender.
Cool, a song comparison. You just gave me my homework assignment for the weekend.

Here's another one. Compare June Carter's version of Ring of Fire with JC's. His version of his wife's song accentuates the risk and the glory, her's the pain and the fear...
Of course, you can always listen to Dread Zepplin's version of Ramble on and the original version and then find the folk songs that inspried it. That's wierd.r

I stumbled upon this site as I was in the process of doing some online research. I actually had never heard or read these lyrics before and found them extremely powerful and disturbing.
