Twenty-five years ago today, John Lennon was shot and killed by Mark Chapman, a crazy evangelical Christian. Did God tell Chapman to assassinate Lennon just like God told our president to invade Iraq? Perhaps. You know, this "God" character is kinda shady. I don't think I'd trust him. But, back to Lennon...
Fans have gathered to honor the fallen Beatle on this anniversary of his death. I'm not one who likes idolizing the dead, especially someone who dies young and is transformed into a martyr. But I like John Lennon. He was probably the most authentic Beatle--he stood for something, truth, if nothing else. His music was real compared to Paul McCartney' stupid bullshit drivel and Ringo's attempt at music. Well, he's Ringo, what do you expect? I won't trash George Harrison 'cos I dig his Eastern spiritual stuff, and, he had at least one solid good album.
Lennon's song Imagine--which is essentially plea for utopia--has become a liberal anthem of sorts. I personally don't believe utopia is possible. I think human nature is damned. Look at us, all we do is destroy the world with every opportunity we get. Therefore, I like what A Perfect Circle did to John Lennon's Imagine last year. They made a dark, morose-sounding cover with a killer video to boot.
Check out the video (the second icon on the left).
It gives a whole new meaning to Lennon's happy feel-good anthem.

i would have loved to see lennon live long enough to become the fat elvis or a useless war-supporting hack like paul mccartney.

Lennon would be disgusted ... and the Dear Leader would have a separate department dedicated to following him around ...

Paul McCartney is such a douchebag. Somebody please hit him over the head with a guitar.

Can anyone think of any OTHER singer/songwriter/rock star who's been assassinated? Just bizarre. Would have been nice to see what he would have produced these last 25 years.

Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his father. Does that count? Although, I agree it's odd for a musician to be assassinated.
