"Has President Bush been so damaged by scandals and public disapproval that he has no choice but to appoint qualified, principled people to important positions?"
Paul Krugman nails it -- frightening but possible. He admits that he knows the guy, and likes the guy. I caught a piece on NPR about his semi-campaign to get major league baseball to change the calculation of ERA. A Bush appointee with a sense of humor and a track record of excellence at other things than making the Bush family feel like it's the cente rof the universe.
Krugman has it right...'
By Bush administration standards, the choice of Ben Bernanke to succeed Alan Greenspan as chairman of the Federal Reserve was just weird.
For one thing, Mr. Bernanke is actually an expert in monetary policy, as opposed to, say, Arabian horses."
New York Slime wants me to PAY to read Krugman? I'll take your word for it that Krugman's article is a good read.
yeah, Bush made a safe pic for Greenspan's seat. But maybe he could appoint Brownie for SCOTUS.

from that same npr story, his colleague was asked if mr. bernanke is a 'supply-sider'. the answer (paraphrased): there are no serious economists who believe in supply side ecomics.
