Paul Krugman, Martin Wolff and even Ben Freaking Stein (Half-time brilliant, half-time Bozo) have all weighed in on the stimulus package as not being audacious enough. Well,
this is why they are probably right ...
The nation is losing jobs so quickly that the government, racing to deal with the crisis, is having trouble keeping up.
The
U.S. unemployment rate last month leapt half a percentage point,
to 8.1 percent, the highest level since 1983, according to data
released yesterday. The stunning pace of job losses raises the
possibility that, perhaps as early as this summer, one in 10 Americans
will be out of a job even though they are actively looking for work. It
also means that the government faces even more pressure to take further
action to stabilize the economy and the financial system.
Crusader AXE did some civic responsibility thing last night. The Crossroads of Opportunity's version of Yale and the local Chamber of Commerce are hosting a job fair in a couple of weeks, and GINORMOUS sponsored a Resume/Interview presentation for 65 lucky participants. Over 200 people tried to sign up. I noticed we wasted seats on social service types who were there to see if what they had been telling people was correct. It was. People don't listen...people lie, they don't understand, they don't follow up. Talking to the Executive Director of the Chamber, she said that they were going to have at least 45 employers. Figuring that the average job fair brings in 50 candidates for each employer normally, I'm figuring a near Woodstockian debacle, with perhaps 4500 people showing up to compete for...200 jobs? Mostly entry level or low-skill?
The Crossroads has lost it's GM Dealer -- note, no loss to the community or to GM, they were incredibly screwed up and went through two owners during my time here, both of whom had incredibly obnoxious commercials. I looked at a G8 one day while I was doing my semi-annual AXE mobile tire replacement --I drive fast, performance cars eat tires, I drive a performance car fast, you get it -- and I decided that the commercials were really great representations of the place. However, that was 25 jobs that went away, in a town of 20000. Without warning...
What we're seeing is an erosion of the economic underpinnings of the country. It had been happening for years -- I have problems caring that much about gizillionaires being bilked by Madoff. He's scum, but if you're so rich you don't pay attention, you need some time slinging burgers for Mickey D's to get an idea of what you ought to pay attention to. However, the process is speeding up.
Let's just let Jimmy and Shane explain where we are and where we might be going...
I remember that play.
Sammy Baugh first used it (more effective when they wore leather helmets and no crossbars).
Don't forget Mr. Axe, that the Clintonistas changed the formulary.
The numbers now being reported are (a bit) on the low side.
burn that rubber...
